Airline travel used to be simple: book your ticket, pack your bag, and go.
Now? Travelers are getting hit with checked bag fees, overweight charges, and surprise gate-check costs—sometimes totaling more than the flight itself.
With airlines charging $30 to $75+ per checked bag (each way), it’s no surprise travelers are actively searching for ways to avoid these fees altogether.
The new hike would bring the fee to check a first piece of luggage to $45, and $55 for a second bag on each airline. A third bag would cost a whooping $200.
Checking luggage on American Airlines flights to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and Guyana is also getting pricier: One bag now costs $35 (up from $30), while second bag is $45 (up from $40).
The good news? You don’t have to keep paying.
